Daytint — Privacy Policy

Daytint is a personal mood journal developed by Matteo Cavalluzzo ("we", "us"). This policy explains what data the app handles and why. Questions? Email mcavalluzzo.apps@gmail.com.

The short version

• Daytint works offline and keeps your journal on your device.
• Creating an account is optional. If you do, your entries are backed up and synced across your devices.
• No ads, no ad tracking, and no profiling. We never sell or share your data.
• We count anonymous usage events (like "an entry was saved") to see which features work. They never contain what you wrote, and you can switch them off in Settings.
• You can permanently delete your account and its cloud data from inside the app.

What we collect and why

• Your journal content — mood ratings, notes, category ratings, and dates you enter. Stored locally on your device. If you sign in, a copy is also stored in Google Cloud Firestore under your account so it can be backed up and synced to your other devices.
• Account information — only if you choose to create an account. With email sign-up we store your email address; with Google sign-in we receive your email address, name, and basic Google profile information. This is used solely to sign you in and associate your synced journal with you. Authentication is handled by Google Firebase Authentication.
• Crash reports and diagnostics — if the app crashes or a sync operation fails, a technical report (stack trace, device model, OS version, app version, and a random installation identifier) is sent to Google Firebase Crashlytics so we can find and fix the problem. Crash reports never include your journal content, notes, or ratings. The installation identifier is generated by Crashlytics to tell one installation apart from another; it is not linked to your account and it is not an advertising identifier. This reporting is always on and there is currently no way to switch it off in the app.
• Anonymous usage events — so we can tell which parts of the app are actually useful, we record a small set of events via Google Firebase Analytics: that the app was opened, that an entry was saved (and whether it was a past day, whether it had a note, and how many areas were rated), that the editor was opened or abandoned, that Insights or search were used, that a reminder was set and at which hour, the outcome of a sign-in attempt, and that an export finished or an error was shown.
  
  What these never contain: your notes, your mood ratings, your category names, your email address, or anything else you typed. Every value is a fixed label, a yes/no, or a count. Someone with the entire analytics database could see that a person saved an entry, and never what the entry said. Advertising ID and Android ID collection are switched off, and these events are never used for advertising or shared with advertisers.
  
  You can turn this off. Open Settings → Share anonymous usage data. Switching it off stops the events described above and also stops the automatic ones Firebase would otherwise collect on its own, so nothing further is sent.

What we do NOT do

• No advertising, no advertising identifiers, no cross-app tracking, and no profiling. Our usage analytics record which features are used, never who you are or what you wrote.
• No collection of your location, contacts, photos, or files. When you restore from a backup, the app reads only the single file you pick in your device's file picker.
• No selling or sharing of your data with third parties for their own use.

How your data is stored and protected

• Data on your device stays on your device unless you sign in. Android's automatic backup is switched off for Daytint, so the system never copies your journal anywhere either (see below).
• Synced data is stored in Google Firebase (Cloud Firestore) and transmitted over encrypted HTTPS/TLS connections. Security rules restrict every record so it is readable and writable only by the signed-in account that owns it.
• We keep your synced data for as long as your account exists. Deleting your account deletes it.

Android device backup

Daytint switches off Android's automatic backup, for both cloud backups and device-to-device transfers. Your journal is never copied into your Google account backup and is never carried across when you set up a new phone.

This is deliberate: a journal is private, and we would rather it stayed on the one device you put it on. It does mean that if you lose or reset your phone, entries kept only on that device are gone. If you want your journal to survive a lost phone, either sign in so it is backed up and synced, or use Settings → Back up to export a copy you keep yourself.

Third-party services

Daytint uses Google Firebase (Authentication, Cloud Firestore, Crashlytics, and Analytics) as its backend to provide optional sign-in, sync, crash reporting, and anonymous usage counts. Data you sync is processed and stored on Google's infrastructure and is subject to Google's Firebase privacy and security terms. We do not use any other third-party data processors.

Deleting your data

• Individual entries: delete any day from within the app.
• Local data: clear the app's storage or uninstall the app.
• Your account and all cloud data: open Settings → Delete account in the app. This permanently removes your account and everything backed up to the cloud. You may also request deletion by emailing mcavalluzzo.apps@gmail.com.

Children

Daytint is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. Any changes will be posted on this page with a new "last updated" date.
